About Your Queen: Mikell Reed Carroll is a 42-year-old wife, mother, attorney, volunteer and business owner. Born and raised in a small town in Maine and raised as the oldest of 5 children by a single mother, Mikell’s family struggled financially. Mikell was also born with a sever visual impairment, making her legally blind in one eye. Despite these challenges, with the encouragement of her mother, Mikell went on to become the first member of her family to attend college, graduating magna cum laude from Saint Joseph’s College in Maine and then continuing to the University of Maine School of Law, where she obtained her Juris Doctor.

Mikell financed her education on her own through scholarships, grants, loans and working several jobs while in school. After a five year career in non-profit law assisting more than 6000 victims of crime, Mikell now works abroad for the US Department of State. Along with her husband of nearly ten years and two children, ages 1 and 5, Mikell and her family currently live in Zagreb, Croatia, where she and her husband work at the US Embassy.

Mikell’s platform is the Prevention of Heart Disease in Women. Mikell has been a volunteer and official Ambassador for the American Heart Association since 2012 and has helped raise more than $12,000 for the organization in addition to volunteering hundreds of hours and helping to spread awareness about heart disease. In 2017, Mikell received the President’s Volunteer Service medal for her extensive volunteer work and the same year was also featured in the February heart health issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, sharing her story and family struggles with heart disease.

Mikell has a personal initiative: Walking to Wipe Out Heart Disease and strives to show people that even simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference toward their heart health. As part of her effort to spread awareness around the world, Mikell has organized National Wear Red Day events in four countries: USA, Croatia, Vietnam and Nicaragua and has hopes to have similar events in more than 100 countries. In addition to the American Heart Association, Mikell has volunteered for countless other charities and organizations, including: Habitat for Humanity, Make A Wish Foundation, Luke’s Wings, Refugee Aid Serbia, UNICEF, the Tigerlilly Foundation, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, National MS Society, Bosom Buddy Baskets, and the American Cancer Society, to name a few.

Mikell is also a small business owner, starting a small candy buffet and events planning business after designing a candy buffet for her own wedding. Her events have been featured in Romantic Homes magazine and the Catch My Party website and blog. Mikell hopes to expand her business after her husband’s retirement from the Foreign Service.

The most important thing to Mikell is her family and she is very proud of her husband, a combat veteran of the US Marine Corps and currently serving as a Foreign Service officer in the US department of State and her two children. They enjoy traveling the world together, hiking and even volunteering together.
